Keeping our environment clean is our top priority. April 27, 2009 Thank you for your inquiry as to our environmental responsibilities at Journal Graphics. I am particularly proud of the programs we have in place demonstrating our commitment to a green environment. Journal Graphics has state-of-the-art emissions equipment recently installed. Our Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer System (RTO) is actually energy positive as recognized by the State of Oregon. It contains a system which controls all heat-set presses at 95% efficiency plus, with destruction efficiency up to 99%, far beyond state and federal guidelines. In addition, this system uses up to 50% less natural gas in its operation compared to conventional methods. We also have installed a new (2005) Carrier water-cooled screw chiller with a modern cooling tower enabling “free” cooling to all equipment when the outdoor temperature is under 50 degrees. This chiller saves over 426,200 Kwh of electricity over the prior system and is encouraged by the Oregon Department of Energy. Journal Graphics has purchased “on demand” compressor/vacuum system. This system reduces the amount of electricity required by 75% while still meeting the demands of our equipment. We have recently converted our plate making system to Agfa’s ThermalFuse CTP plate system. This system virtually eliminates all chemicals from the process of making plates. Journal Graphics is now using “Revolution” heatset inks. This link explains how this ink limits the impact on the environment as well as allowing us to use the “Soy” compliance logo. Journal Graphics has also added some capabilities in the last 18 months to insure the ability to produce our customers work in a timely manner as well as give them the highest quality possible. Journal Graphics management is committed to seek, implement and follow the principles, chain-of-custody and management practices of environmentally superior and responsible certified wood product standards. To this end, Journal Graphics will manage certified paper printing jobs according to the chain-of-custody standards of FSC, SFI, PEFC. In addition, all paper waste is 100% recycled through Smurfit Recycling Baling Systems along with miscellaneous items such as rags, oil and solvents. We buy as much paper as possible by railcar. Buying paper this way reduces significantly the amount of fossil fuel used to transport paper. We at Journal Graphics are very pleased with our state-of-the-art environmental systems and new equipment and would invite any further questions you may have. Best regards,
